But the gameloop aspect of my game is making me second guess. These BaaS (Firebase, Playfab) seem great so I don't have to worry about the infra stuff (websockets, database, scaling, etc). Even then, I'm not experienced to know if a single gameloop can support concurrent games and scale, but that's a different problem. So far, I'm beginning to think I'll just have to plunker down and create a standard server. I'm looking into other services like Playfab or even DigitalOcean's App Platform. I definitely cannot do ticking on the client side because of browser throttling. Also they don't support scheduled tasks at the interval I need, so I'm wasting a lot of resources with the gameloop (ticking) within a function. I'm finding that the realtime performance is really great with firebase, but running a gameloop and accepting player inputs using cloud/serverless functions is very choppy. These are very simple specs, so I thought I could use Firebase and Cloud Functions to avoid maintaining a backend infra. The player is expected to respond to those elements and scored based on when they respond. Elements will be revealed on the screen at specific intervals as part of the gameplay. More details: The server needs to be ticking all the time. Run a gameloop for 5 minutes per game (timer, game state, etc). What is the best way to implement a backend architecture that can: There is a multiplayer element where timing by the tenths of seconds is critical. It is mostly text-based, so no intensive graphics (think without the board/pieces). I'm creating a browser game in nodejs/react. On your favorite site,, you will find a wide range of games that can be played by several players at once, as well as the categories: 2 Player Games, 3 Player Games, 4 Player Games, 5 Player Games. This is my first foray into game-dev and I only have webapp experience professionally. more important to arrive with the most points, and in this way you will have to collect as many points on the entire route so as to accumulate as many final points as possible. The differentiation of the players is made at the end of the game or the levels, most of the times the one who reaches the end of the race or the mission the fastest manages to win first place of the ranking, but sometimes it is not the most important to reach the first. While on board the Space Rig, you can access an overview of all public lobbies. The most popular multiplayer games are those that stimulate competition, as well as car racing, or fighting zombies, or various sports activities where you can participate in races against other competitors at the same time. Post a message on this channel and other players will reply. There is little to explain here since it’s a good ol’ PUBG: loot, shoot, hide, ambush, survive and be the one who leaves with a chicken dinner A constantly shrinking field adds dynamics to the gameplay. Multiplayer games fall into two broad categories: the category of games that are played from the same computer, using the same keyboard, mouse, or peripheral equipment, and browser multiplayer games, as well as IO games where each player has a separate computer and can play from another location. PUBG Pixel 2 is a browser version of the legendary game that has started the battle royal frenzy. Multiplayer Games is the category of children and kids who want to play online games in multiplayer, with several children at once so that the competition is at a much higher level.

"One of the most graceful and moving nonfiction books I’ve read in a very long time. She has taught creative writing and science journalism at the University of Memphis, the University of Pittsburgh, and New York University. in biological sciences and an MFA in creative nonfiction. It is being translated into more than twenty-five languages, adapted into a young reader edition, and being made into an HBO film produced by Oprah Winfrey and Alan Ball. Skloot is the founder and president of The Henrietta Lacks Foundation. It was chosen as a best book of 2010 by more than sixty media outlets, including Entertainment Weekly, People, and the New York Times. Skloot's debut book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, took more than a decade to research and write, and instantly became a New York Times bestseller. She was named one of five surprising leaders of 2010 by the Washington Post. She is coeditor of The Best American Science Writing 2011 and has worked as a correspondent for NPR’s Radiolab and PBS’s Nova ScienceNOW. Rebecca Skloot is an award-winning science writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine O, The Oprah Magazine Discover and many others. Intimate in feeling, astonishing in scope, and impossible to put down, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks captures the beauty and drama of scientific discovery, as well as its human consequences. Deborah was consumed with questions: Had scientists cloned her mother? Had they killed her to harvest her cells? And if her mother was so important to medicine, why couldn’t her children afford health insurance? Over the decade it took to uncover this story, Rebecca became enmeshed in the lives of the Lacks family-especially Henrietta’s daughter Deborah. As Rebecca Skloot so brilliantly shows, the story of the Lacks family-past and present-is inextricably connected to the dark history of experimentation on African Americans, the birth of bioethics, and the legal battles over whether we control the stuff we are made of. And though the cells had launched a multimillion-dollar industry that sells human biological materials, her family never saw any of the profits. Henrietta’s family did not learn of her “immortality” until more than twenty years after her death, when scientists investigating HeLa began using her husband and children in research without informed consent. Yet Henrietta Lacks remains virtually unknown, buried in an unmarked grave. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects helped lead to important advances like in vitro fertilization, cloning, and gene mapping and have been bought and sold by the billions. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells-taken without her knowledge-became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than sixty years. Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. There are two unpaired electrons in the 2p subshell, so if carbon were to hybridize from this ground state, it would be able to form at most two bonds. The 1s electrons are considered to be core electrons and are not available for bonding. Let's look at the electron configuration of ground state (lowest energy state) carbon:įrom the ground state electron configuration, one can see that carbon has four valence electrons, two in the 2s subshell and two in the 2p subshell. By looking at the electron configuration, one is able to identify these valence electrons. The valence shell electrons are found in the incomplete, outermost shell. The hybridization of carbon involved in each of these bonds will be investigated in this handout.īonding in any element will take place with only the valence shell electrons. Carbon may form single, double and triple bonds. This is largely due to the types of bonds it can form and the number of different elements it can join in bonding. It may form virtually an infinite number of compounds. Hybrid orbitals normally participate in covalent sigma bond formation, whereas atomic orbitals participate in both sigma and pi bond formation. The element, carbon, is one of the most versatile elements on the periodic table in terms of the number of compounds it may form. But all the hybrid orbitals are equivalent and have the same electron number. Different atomic orbitals have different shapes and number of electrons.Different types and numbers of atomic orbitals are participating in making hybrid orbitals. Hybrid orbitals are made from the atomic orbitals. What is the difference between Atomic Orbitals and Hybrid Orbitals? The number of hybrid orbitals produced is equal to the sum of orbitals being hybridized. Likewise in sp 2 hybridization three hybrid orbitals and in sp hybridization two hybrid orbitals are formed. Then the 2s electron and the three 2p electrons mix together and form four equivalent sp 3 hybrid orbitals. When excited, one electron in the 2s level move to the 2p level giving three 3 electrons. For example, in CH 4, C has 6 electrons with the electron configuration 1s 2 2s 2 2p 2 at the ground state. The most common hybrid orbitals are sp 3, sp 2 and sp. There are many types of hybrid orbitals formed by mixing s, p and d orbitals. The result of hybridization is the hybrid orbital. Hybridization is the mixing of two non equivalent atomic orbitals. So collectively, following are the total number of electrons that can be resided in an orbital. There are five d orbitals and 7 f orbitals with different shapes. They are arranged in space so that their axes are perpendicular to each other. The place where two lobes touch each other is known as a node. One lobe is said to be positive, and the other lobe is negative. P orbitals are dumbbell shaped with two lobes. The superscript number after the orbital name shows the number of electrons in that orbital. 1, 2, 3….n integer values are the quantum numbers. For example, when we write the electron configuration, we write as 1s 2, 2s 2, 2p 6, 3s 2. Atomic orbitals are characterized by quantum numbers, and each atomic orbital can accommodate two electrons with opposite spins. An atomic orbital can be defined as, a region of space where the probability of finding an electron is large in an atom. The plots of Ψ 2 in x, y, and z axes show these probabilities, and they take the shape of s, p, d and f orbitals. In contrary, if Ψ 2 is low, then the electron probability density there is low. Therefore, in the space, electron probability density is large. So, if Ψ 2 is a larger value, then the probability of finding the electron in that space is higher. According to Born, Ψ 2 expresses the probability of finding an electron in a particular location. Max Born points out a physical meaning to the square of the wave function (Ψ 2) after Schrodinger put forward his theory. Wave function (Ψ) corresponds to different states for the electron. With this, Schrodinger developed equations to find the wave nature of an electron and came up with the wave equation and wave function. They found that an electron has both particle and wave properties. The quantum mechanics came into the picture with their findings. The bonding in molecules was understood in a new way with the new theories presented by Schrodinger, Heisenberg, and Paul Diarc. Once it’s there, you can select a message with SaneAttachments and hit ⌘Y (Command-Y) to run it. A powerful motor shreds paper, cards, and CDs down to 4mm x 12mm. The compact size allows placement on counters, desktops, or under tables or worksurfaces. TRU RED Mailmate is the perfect solution for todays home or small office shredding needs. To install this custom bundle, download the latest release from GitHub, unzip it, and place the entire “.mmbundle” folder into ~/Library/Application Support/MailMate/Bundles/. TRU RED 12-sheet micro-cut shredder reduces a standard letter sheet to up to 1200 particles. Hit ⌘Y, choose the command, and it will scan the email body for all of the file links, then open a Finder window with all of the files from that message selected. But the new command, “Reveal SaneAttachments,” is delightful, if I may say so. Right now it only has two commands, and one of them is completely useless since MailMate comes with a “Copy Message URL” command built in. I started a MailMateMate bundle on GitHub. So I wrote a MailMate bundle command to reveal the files directly in Finder with a keystroke. But when I’m on my Mac, getting to the files requires opening the link in a browser and then using Dropbox’s slightly inconsistent interface to reveal the files locally. Obviously, that’s the best solution for cross-platform compatibility. My only issue with it is that the links go to the Dropbox website. The originals are saved for a period of time, then cleared out of your mailbox. One of its features is “SaneAttachments,” which automatically finds emails with large attachments, moves them to Dropbox, and replaces the email with one containing only the Dropbox links. It’s easily trainable and completely indispensable. Also, “BlackHole” for senders I never want to see again but don’t want to click a sketchy “unsubscribe” link. My inbox only contains emails that are actually of importance, other messages get sorted into “Later”, “Bulk”, “News”, “Reading”, etc. SaneBox is a service that intelligently sorts my email into categories. MailMate was one of my 2016 picks for best productivity apps. MailMate is my email app of choice on macOS, and not only because it supports Markdown. MailMate is not the most widespread, the cheapest, or the greatest looking email client, but I also have no aspiration to MailMate ever being any of these. I suppose for starters I should reiterate my love of the two topics of conversation here: MailMate and SaneBox. Stress has a way of clouding judgement and causing you to make irrational decisions, many of which might feel right at the time, but don't ultimately further your life goals. I was always looking a year or more ahead and I had a very clear picture in my mind of how I wanted my life to look like in the future. I Stayed Focused on The Bigger Picture (and the Small Steps That Would Take Me Towards it) I can't think of a time where I slept on a response and didn't tone it down a bit. I haven't always gotten this right and there hasn't always been the luxury of time between emotion and response, but as a strategy to keep peace and maintain sanity, it's proven invaluable time and time again. It hurt to do that because I really wanted the house, but I also knew that "want" wasn't enough, it had to actually make sense and without agreeing to my terms, it simply didn't. I sat on the email, went and did a conference talk, drank some beer, had a sleep and responded the next day, cancelling the deal. I received their reply and was initially upset. A perfect example is that the house purchase fell through due to the vendor not being agreeable to the terms I set forth. I'd sit on my own emails for a day, granting time to reflect on whether my words represented the best path forward or merely reflected my emotional state at the time. But none of these feelings would help me make rational decisions.įrequently, I'd simply sit on an email for a day. More than anything, it was the unpredictability of emotions that got me I could be cruising along thinking everything was on track then wammo! An email, a text message or a phone call would suddenly throw everything back into turmoil. I Did My Utmost to Not Make Decisions Based on EmotionsĮmotions have been high during this period, both professionally and personally. Finding common ground with friends was always a huge relief I wasn't alone in what I was going through. I mean that across all the fronts I was feeling the stress on too whilst in San Francisco in particular, I spent a bunch of time with people I knew well who'd been through similar business processes and as for the things stressing me in my personal life, it felt like every second person I confided in had a similar story. The thing that perhaps surprised me most about those discussions with friends was how much their own stories resonated with mine. The quote above about helping to increase a sense of belonging really nails it. Often those discussions have directly focused on the stresses in life but equally often, they've been an opportunity to bond around less contentious common interests cars, tech, family. Since Feb this year as travel has become a thing of the past, it's meant talking to friends in different parts of the world every couple of days. Last year and early this year, it meant spending a bunch of time with friends in person during my travels. They can also help increase our sense of belonging, improve our self-confidence and help reduce stress and anxiety. Our friends can be that ear to talk to, shoulder to lean on and nonjudgmental perspective that we need. That’s why it’s important to have healthy friendships to turn to in times of need. Putting it in words now seems almost stupidly obvious, but there's a lot of evidence around the benefits of friendship on mental health: It can be hard to talk to family members about mental health. It wasn't until the stress really started mounting early last year that I actually made a conscious effort to do this. Maybe that's "just what blokes do" (or don't do), but it certainly wasn't a conscious decision on my behalf. I realised something very profound last year I've very rarely discussed my emotional state with friends. Here's how I sustained my performance whilst under extreme stress: I Leaned on Friends More Than I Ever Had Before It was extreme stress the likes I'd never dealt with before at a time when the demands on me were at an all-time high, so I started writing this blog post, adding to it at the worst of times. As part of attempting to rebuild my life, I was also in the midst of buying another house, a stressful process at the best of time let alone under these circumstances whilst on the other side of the world. That much was very broadly known publicly, but what I haven't spoken about until now is that earlier that year, my wife and I had decided to separate and later divorce. Project Svalbard (the sale of HIBP which ultimately turned out to be a no-sale) was a huge part of that and it was all happening whilst still being solely responsible for running the project. It was at the absolute zenith of stress a time when I had never been under as much pressure as I was right at that moment. I started writing this blog post alone in a hotel room in Budapest last September. On the latter point, previous studies have emphasized that the population exposure implications of a given magnitude of emissions will vary significantly by location, largely as a function of population density at various distances from the source but also influenced by atmospheric conditions affecting pollutant fate and transport. Economic impacts will tend to increase approximately proportional to delay time, but public health impacts will have somewhat different dependencies, including relationships with population size and age distribution (both of which will also influence traffic demand). On the former point, when density is close to capacity, small increases in traffic volumes generally lead to larger increases in delays (i.e., congestion follows a non-linear function). Multiple factors can complicate the comparison between economic and public health impacts, including some of the non-linearities in the system and variability across urban areas. Thus, the public health implications of congestion could be appreciable and merit further investigation. They find strong evidence for a causative role for traffic-related air pollution on mortality, particularly from cardiovascular events. Recently, an expert committee summarized the available epidemiological literature on exposure to traffic-generated air pollution and adverse health effects. PM 2.5 has been associated with premature mortality in multiple studies, and health impact assessments have demonstrated PM 2.5-related damages on the order of hundreds of billions of dollars per year. While this represents a substantial economic loss, there are multiple externalities from congestion that have not been previously characterized, including the public health impacts of excess air pollutant emissions during periods of congestion.įine particulate matter (PM 2.5) is influenced by motor vehicle emissions of both PM 2.5 and particle precursors, with source apportionment studies finding vehicles contributing up to one-third of ambient PM 2.5 in urban areas in the US, with an even greater contribution if secondary sulfate and nitrate are considered. Multiple studies have modeled congestion in urban areas and assigned economic values to the excess fuel consumption and time wasted in traffic, concluding that congestion leads to annual economic burdens ranging from $83 billion to $124 billion. Our analyses indicate that the public health impacts of congestion may be significant enough in magnitude, at least in some urban areas, to be considered in future evaluations of the benefits of policies to mitigate congestion.Ĭongestion arises when a roadway system approaches vehicle capacity, resulting in numerous negative impacts ranging from wasted fuel and time to increases in tailpipe emissions. Across cities and years, the public health impacts range from more than an order of magnitude less to in excess of the economic impacts. In future years, the economic impacts grow (to over $100 billion in 2030) while the public health impacts decrease to $13 billion in 2020 before increasing to $17 billion in 2030, given increasing population and congestion but lower emissions per vehicle. We estimate that the monetized value of PM 2.5-related mortality attributable to congestion in these 83 cities in 2000 was approximately $31 billion (2007 dollars), as compared with a value of time and fuel wasted of $60 billion. Marginal concentration changes are related to a concentration-response function for mortality, with a value of statistical life approach used to monetize the impacts. We link traffic volume and speed data with the MOBILE6 model to characterize emissions of PM 2.5 and particle precursors attributable to congestion, and we use a source-receptor matrix to evaluate the impact of these emissions on ambient PM 2.5 concentrations. We evaluate 83 individual urban areas using traffic demand models to estimate the degree of congestion in each area from 2000 to 2030. In this study, we evaluate the public health impacts of ambient exposures to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) concentrations associated with a business-as-usual scenario of predicted traffic congestion. Moreover, the relative magnitudes of economic and public health impacts of congestion would be expected to vary significantly across urban areas, as a function of road infrastructure, population density, and atmospheric conditions influencing pollutant formation, but this variability has not been explored. Previous analyses have estimated the economic costs of congestion, related to fuel and time wasted, but few have quantified the public health impacts or determined how these impacts compare in magnitude to the economic costs. Traffic congestion is a significant issue in urban areas in the United States and around the world. It feels more like of a remake of the original film and a non-canonical spin-off rather than a actual reboot.
